The Rehabilitation, Aged and Community Services (RACS) provides integrated and effective services for rehabilitation, aged care and community care throughout the ACT. This includes healthcare and support for people with acute, post-acute and long-term illnesses.
The Department of Geriatric Medicine, at Canberra Health Services, promotes healthy aging through the care of older adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings based at the Canberra Hospital, a tertiary teaching hospital and at the University of Canberra Hospital, a stand-alone Sub-acute facility.
The department provides care in the following areas:
- Acute Care,
- Subacute Care,
- Ortho-geriatric Medicine and
- Community Care (RADAR) and specialist input to specialist dementia care unit (SDCU)
In addition to providing health care to the elderly in Canberra and surrounding regions, the department is firmly committed to the education of both Advanced Trainees (ATs) and Basic Physician Trainees (BPTs).
This position will report to the Clinical Director of Geriatric Medicine and is expected to work across Canberra Hospital and UCH campuses.
Geriatricians will work across Acute Care of the Elderly ward, Sub-Acute ward (UCH) and Community Geriatrics, on a rotational basis.
Consultants will also contribute to education, training, quality improvement and research, within the department.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following under limited direction of the Rehabilitation Clinical Director you will:
- Perform clinical duties as required and participate in a clinical on-call roster. Liaise and work in partnership with other health care professionals and provide high level medical advice/opinion on assessment and case management.
- Provide training opportunities for registrars, junior medical officers and medical students, and mentor the professional development of all staff within the Department.
- Conduct, supervise and encourage research, academic teaching and participation in quality and safety activities.
- Represent the Department, Division and Canberra Health Services on relevant committees, workings parties and appropriate Territory and National forums.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Essential
- Registerable as a Specialist Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Physicians (RACP) or an equivalent higher specialist qualification
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) and Australian Council of Healthcare Standards (ACHS) clinical indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role as detailed in the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering with Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.
- Not be the subject of an unresolved scope of clinical practice review of by a state/territory credentialing and scope of clinical practice committee (such as the CHS Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee) or a current inquiry by AHPRA.
- Have had no substantiated performance or behavioural issues in the last three years, no such matters currently under investigation, and have not been found to display behaviours and/or performance inconsistent with CHS values.
Experience
Essential
- A minimum of five (5) years post fellowship working in in General Practice
Desirable
- Knowledge of and/or experience working with people with gender concerns and/or gender dysphoria and/or LBGTIQ+ community
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
- Obtain and maintain Canberra Health Services Credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for medical professionals.

CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

North Canberra Hospital - As of 3 July 2023 Calvary Public Hospital Bruce transitioned to CHS and became North Canberra Hospital. The transition will deliver a health system networked under one provider and will provide increased workforce opportunities for staff at both CHS sites. The ACT Government will be building a new northside hospital on the existing hospital campus in Bruce to meet the growing health care needs of our community, with construction to commence mid-decade providing more beds, increased services, and increased career opportunities.
