The Division of Surgery (DoS) is responsible for delivering services to inpatient surgical wards in the following specialties: General Surgery, Gynae Oncology, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Urology, Cardio-thoracic, Orthopaedics, Plastics, Otolaryngology, Maxillofacial, Emergency General Surgery and Trauma Care.

Ward B57B Neurosurgery is a 28 -bed inpatient unit delivering patient centred care with a focus on the management of patients with altered Neurological function. The unit includes a 8 bed Neurosurgical Acute Care Unit (NACU) allowing close observation of post-operative intracranial surgery patients and neurosurgical patients who are at risk of deterioration. Ward B57B has a great team of nurses who strive to provide positive outcomes for patients through the utilisation of the Team Nursing model.

The Registered Nurse Level 2 is expected to demonstrate competence in advanced nursing practice while guiding less experienced nursing staff and students. The organization considers the Registered Nurse Level 2 to be a source of expert nursing knowledge, skills, and attributes. This nurse must showcase a higher level of skill and the ability to perform a more demanding role across several domains, including clinical care, leadership, education, safety, and communication.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Consultant, you will perform the role and responsibilities of a Registered Nurse to provide the best quality care. You will:

  1. Provide leadership in coordinating total patient care activities including admission and discharge planning utilising the nursing process, risk assessment and evidence informed practice.
  2. Liaise with Treating Team, Clinical Nurse Consultant and Multidisciplinary Team members to achieve an agreed standard of care.
  3. Provide Clinical Supervision and support junior nursing staff with the provision of direct care to patients with complex needs.
  4. Review and evaluate models of care delivery and initiate appropriate change. Participate in the development of policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines relevant to the clinical area. Participate in the development of patient and staff education strategies.
  5. Participate in staff orientation and the preceptorship of new and less experienced staff.
  6. Actively participate in all appropriate ACT Health and Canberra Health Services strategic and operational development activities as well as individual service enhancement and quality initiatives.
  7. Undertaking other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice ensuring the delivery of high-quality person and family centred, safe and high-quality patient care.
  8. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Competencies

  • Experienced surgical nurse with advanced nursing skills in general surgery, trauma, and neurosurgery nursing.
  • Strong organisational skills with a high degree of drive.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to accommodate change and provide responsive services to meet clients’ needs.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Relevant Tertiary Nursing qualifications in nursing
  • Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
