Position overview

The Decision Support Unit (DSU) is led by an Executive Group Manager reporting to the Chief Finance Officer within Canberra Health Services (CHS).

The DSU’s role includes:

  • Promoting accountability to achieve strategic goals and building organisational capability to align Activity Based Funding (ABF) and Operational Planning
  • provision of ICT Services for CHS
  • provision of data quality
  • provision of Health Information Services
  • supporting the efficient use of the Digital Health Record (informatics) and providing the liaison point between CHS and the DHR provider.
  • provision of decision support services to enable operational and non-operational planning and quality reporting.

Clinical Documentation Specialists work closely with clinicians and clinical coders under the direction of the Clinical Documentation Improvement Nurse Manager. This dynamic role offers nurses the opportunity to contribute to the coordination and delivery of Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) initiatives at Canberra Health Services, with a focus on optimising the quality, completeness, timeliness, and accuracy of clinical documentation. By collaborating with clinical teams, these specialists help ensure documentation supports high-quality patient care, accurate clinical coding, compliance with standards, and appropriate hospital funding.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under the direction of the Clinical Documentation Improvement Manager, you will:

  1. Perform concurrent and retrospective review of clinical records to identify discrepancies or omissions that may impact the identification of conditions managed and/or procedures performed.
  2. Work collaboratively with the healthcare team, including at the point of care, to clarify discrepancies or omissions in the documentation to ensure diagnoses and procedures accurately reflect the patient’s clinical status, care delivery and resource utilisation.
  3. Generate verbal and written queries to clinicians, that are clear, non-leading, ethical and in line with the Australian Coding Standards and the Clinical Coding Practice Framework.
  4. Deliver CDI education, which is relevant to the target audience, specialty area and in line with the program objectives.
  5. Build the profile of CDI across Canberra Health Services.
  6. Undertake other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice ensuring the delivery of high-quality person and family centered, safe and high-quality patient care.

  • Be registered (or be eligible for registration) as a Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
