Canberra Health Services (CHS) is focussed on the delivery of high quality, effective, person-centred care. The Gastroenterology & Hepatology Unit (GEHU) is based at The Canberra Hospital campus and provides the following endoscopic services for both inpatients and outpatients:

  • Gastroscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Ano-rectal manometry services

The GEHU performs approximately over 20, 000 occasions of service per year including approximately 6000 procedures. It provides an outpatient clinical service for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), hepatological, pancreatobiliary and general gastrointestinal conditions.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • Under limited direction of the National Bowel Cancer Screening & Polyp Surveillance (NBCSPS) CNC you will assist in the management of the FOBT/polyp surveillance program.
  • Work with the NBCSPS CNC to ensure accurate data is collected and appropriate surveillance intervals are followed as per the National Health and Medical Research Committee (NHMRC) guidelines.
  • Collects and reports on data as per the National Safety & Quality Health Service Standards including the Colonoscopy Clinical Care Standard
  • Facilitate nurse-led clinics for patients following positive Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) results and those requiring surveillance prior to colonoscopy and their follow-up, under the supervision of the NBCSPS CNC.
  • Work as PFUF (Participant Follow Up Function) officer for patients who participated in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) and had positive results in the ACT.
  • Take part in research activities and help maintain databases for these subspeciality clinics. Participate in the development, review and maintenance of clinical standards, policies, protocols and continuous quality improvement.
  • Contribute to effective communication processes to effectively work in a team environment in a diverse range of situations, including negotiation and consultation to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Undertake work in GEHU pre and post procedural care as required.
  • Provide nursing assistance in gastroenterology procedures as required.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

  • Four years full-time equivalent post registration acute care experience

  • Prior experience in gastroenterology nursing is highly desirable

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
