Position overview
North Canberra hospital is seeking staff specialist intensivist to join our expanding and dynamic team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing specialist care for ICU/HDU patients in within the intensive care unit and support for critically unwell and deteriorating patients in the wider hospital. They will play a key role in teaching and supporting junior doctors within the unit and across the hospital. Additionally, the role involves close liaison with patients and families to ensure compassionate care, active participation in the hospital's quality and safety initiatives, and contribution to research undertaken in the unit.
North Canberra is a level 5 10-bed combined ICU/HDU which can care for up to 5 ICU level (or equivalent HDU) patients at any one time. The unit manages a case mix of adult medical and surgical patients and is closely supported by the nearby tertiary ICU. North Canberra ICU is recognised as a C6 unit for CICM training and supports rotating trainees within the ACT.
Our team of specialist intensivists brings expertise across anaesthesia and pain medicine, retrieval medicine, general medicine, and echocardiography and proudly boasts a collaborative and innovative environment.
The position holder is expected to operate within the Public Sector Management Act (1994), the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct and the professional requirements specified by the appointee’s Specialist College.
Key responsibilities
- Management of inpatients and outpatients referred to the ICU including timely triaging, consultation, diagnosis, reporting and treatment. Whilst doing so, promote a commitment to high quality, customer service principles, practices and attributes.
- Contribute to the on-call requirements in ICU and provide support for acute ICU inpatients. This includes overnight, weekend and public holiday cover as required.
- Contribute to clinical governance systems within the ICU by practicing evidence-based medicine, participating in clinical audit and morbidity and mortality review and contributing to the review and maintenance of policies and guidelines.
- Actively engage in the education and training of students attending ANU Medical School, junior medical staff, postgraduate trainees and other members of the clinical team during the provision of clinical care and contribute to research.
- Promote a collaborative approach to care that enables all members of the clinical team to feel respected and valued and optimises patient care and treatment outcomes.
- Maintain effective communication with patients and relatives, hospital staff, medical colleagues and General Practitioners.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
Competencies
- A medical expert, demonstrated by recent and comprehensive experience in Intensive Care Medicine with an ability to form sound conclusions based on evidence and sound judgement.
- Demonstrated ability to perform all critical care procedures safely with recent experience.
- Ability to work within multi-disciplinary and management teams and adapt quickly to a changing environment.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain networks across Canberra Health Services and with external parties.
- Strong organisational skills with a high degree of drive.
- Good understanding of the principles of quality and safety to deliver exceptional care.
Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Be registered or eligible for registration as a specialist medical practitioner in intensive care with the Australian Health Practitioner’s Regulation Agency, with no conditions, undertakings or reprimands (AHPRA).
- Hold a Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM), or expected to hold fellowship within 6 months.
- Not be the subject of an unresolved scope of clinical practice review of by Medical Dental Appointments Advisory Committee or a current inquiry by AHPRA.
Desirable
- Additional qualifications that support excellent performance in intensive care such as diagnostic ultrasound, management, simulation or research qualifications.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Prior to commencement
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
- Current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC) credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for medical professionals.

- Approval for second job will need to be submitted annually. Commitment to second job must not impact on the agreed clinical duties of the specialist at Canberra Hospital.
- Adherence to agreed attendance hours including agreement to annual job planning for clinical operational requirements is required.
- It is expected that the successful applicant will have a track record as a successful member of a clinical team and demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching at all levels including medical, nursing and allied health professional staff and students. There is opportunity to be involved in teaching at the Australian National University Medical School.

Key selection criteria

- Current medical practitioner, registered or eligible for specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) within the next 6 months.
- Demonstrated current Intensive Care clinical practice of a high standard, with ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based best practice
- Demonstrated high level of communication and interpersonal skills, including an ability to provide mentorship, work as a team member in a multidisciplinary environment, and liaise within the health system and with external agencies.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to the importance and provision of quality assurance activities, research and teaching of staff at all levels, including medical, nursing, scientific and allied health professional staff, both postgraduate and undergraduate.
- Evidence of the following attributes: ability to work under pressure; ability to work effectively as part of a team; ability to be flexible, organized and autonomous.
