The Director of Medical Imaging is a senior leadership role within Canberra Health Services, responsible for the strategic, operational, and professional leadership of Medical Imaging services at North Canberra Hospital. The position provides direction for a 24/7 medical imaging service, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, and patient-centred care across all modalities.

The role leads service planning and development, including future Northside Hospital Level 5 imaging service, and contributes to executive decision-making across Medical Services and Allied Health. It is accountable for clinical governance, workforce leadership, financial management, and service performance, while driving innovation, digital transformation, and research to ensure imaging services are efficient, sustainable, and aligned with CHS strategic priorities and standards.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Strategic Leadership Provide strategic
leadership for Medical Imaging at North Canberra Hospital, including planning future Level 5 services, service expansion, and innovation. Contribute to executive and divisional decision-making to align imaging services with organisational priorities.

Operational Management of a 24/7 Service
Oversee the performance and delivery of all imaging modalities, ensuring an effective 24/7 service across emergency, inpatient, and outpatient settings, managing access and integrating imaging within key clinical pathways.

Clinical Governance & Safety Leadership
Lead a robust clinical governance framework to ensure safe, high-quality imaging services. Monitor performance, manage risks and incidents, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain contemporary clinical protocols and standards.

Professional Leadership
Provide discipline leadership aligned with Allied Health frameworks, promoting evidence-based practice. Act as the senior escalation point for complex clinical and service issues.

Workforce Leadership & Capability Development
Lead and develop a multidisciplinary workforce, ensuring effective staffing, performance management, and workforce sustainability. Foster a positive culture aligned with CHS values and support ongoing capability development.

Financial & Resource Management
Manage budget, operational expenditure, and capital planning to ensure efficient and sustainable service delivery. Oversee procurement and lifecycle management of imaging equipment.

Quality Improvement, Risk & Compliance
Drive continuous quality improvement and ensure compliance with CHS and national standards. Oversee risk management, incident response, and accreditation readiness.

Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration
Build strong relationships with clinical, executive, allied health and external stakeholders. Represent Medical Imaging in governance forums and support partnerships with education and training organisations.

Research, Innovation & Digital Health
Promote innovation and research, and lead adoption of digital and emerging imaging technologies. Support clinical trials and academic collaboration.

Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the department and organisation.

Qualifications

Specific requirements include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Medical Imaging (Radiography, Sonography, or Nuclear Medicine) and eligibility for professional registration/accreditation.

Essential

  • Extensive senior leadership experience in a medical imaging service, including management of teams, services or programs.
  • Minimum 7-10 years clinical experience in Medical Imaging.

Desirable

  • Experience in tertiary or Level 4/Level 5 hospital setting.
  • Involvement in major capital projects, such as hospital redevelopment, department design, or commissioning new imaging services.
  • Experience managing change and service transformation at an organisational level.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

Broad experience at a senior level in the delivery, leadership and development of contemporary medical imaging services within an acute hospital setting, with proven ability to supervise medical imaging and support staff, effectively manage change and organisational resources, monitor and report on activity. and have.

  5. Demonstrated experience managing budgets and financial performance, including operational and capital resource allocation.
