Position overview

The North Canberra Hospital is a 256-bed hospital that offers both acute and subacute services. Our model of care sees multidisciplinary teams working collaboratively to provide a high quality of patient care.

The Echocardiography team provide diagnostic cardiac imaging services to non-admitted and admitted adult patients of NCH including from the 6-bed coronary care unit. This service is provided with support and oversight from the CHS Cardiology team including on-site Consultant Cardiologists, cardiology advanced trainees and junior medical officers.

Key responsibilities

Under limited direction of the Deputy Director Medical Imaging (Ultrasound) you will provide a key role in the day-to-day functioning of the echocardiography department. You will

  1. Independently perform high quality echocardiographic imaging procedures for all patients, including the application of advance imaging modalities where required, based on industry guidelines and informed by evidence-based practice within the Echocardiography Department at the North Canberra Hospital.
  2. Independently complete comprehensive echocardiographic reports by considering all clinical measurements and current ASE guidelines and aligning diagnostic findings with the clinical context of the patient.
  3. Support the Echocardiography team by helping to manage the day-to-day operation and organisation of the echocardiography services at NCH, ensuring patient-centred care, efficient service delivery, and equipment acquisition and maintenance.
  4. Plan and provide comprehensive education frameworks for training and mentoring existing and new staff including student Sonographers, Cardiology Advanced Trainees and other visiting health professional or medical students. Attend and participate in departmental seminars and maintain ongoing professional development.
  5. Perform research/quality improvement and change management projects that have a positive impact on patient outcomes, including maintaining clinical standards, policies, and protocols for echocardiography.
  6. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Specific requirements include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (e.g. Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (Cardiac))
  • Current 1A registration with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR).

  1. Proven ability to perform echocardiographic procedures independently, applying sound knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology for interpretation of the results and aligning the findings with the ASE guidelines to complete a comprehensive interim report.
  2. Proven ability to maintain high standards of quality, accuracy, and safety for all echocardiography investigations and to initiate and contribute to quality assurance and quality improvement projects.
  3. High level organisation, communication, and interpersonal skills, including a proven ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.
