Position overview
The Nuclear Medicine and PET department operates within Medical Imaging at Canberra Hospital.
Scanning equipment includes three gamma cameras (a Siemens Intevo Bold xSPECT/CT, Siemens ProSpecta SPECT/CT and Siemens Evo Excel Dual Head), a Bone Mineral Density scanner and a Siemens Biograph Vision 600 scanner which is the cornerstone of our comprehensive PET/CT facility which incorporates three uptake rooms, an automatic injection system and Gallium-68 generator.
Work in the department is both challenging and rewarding, with a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT procedures offered - including paediatric, orthopaedic, gastrointestinal, respiratory, oncology and cardiac studies.
The Nuclear Medicine Embedded Student is a new initiative undertaken in partnership with RMIT University for a student from the local ACT region to study through RMIT and train at Canberra Hospital. The embedded student will be undertaking a Degree in Medical Radiations in Nuclear Medicine in a virtual classroom environment for 3 days per week and the other 2 days will be onsite in a clinical capacity.
The position is a scholarship agreement whereby the student will receive $15,000 per year from Canberra Health Services to help facilitate their learning across the 3.5 year RMIT Degree.
Key Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Learn and practice flexibly and effectively within the Nuclear Medicine team and demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes related to Nuclear Medicine Technologist roles, in line with current learnings through the RMIT Embedded Student Course.
- Complete clinical work and competencies to enable continued learning and enrolment in the RMIT Embedded Student Course.
- Provide safe, effective assistance to culturally diverse patients of all ages while preparing them for Nuclear Medicine and PET imaging procedures.
- Share information and knowledge with team members and contribute to the patient health record in accordance with organisational guidelines and legal requirements, and within scope of practice.
- Contribute to a range of indirect clinical activities including but not limited to
- Ensuring equipment is clean and ready for use in a medical imaging environment
- Assisting with manual handling tasks (eg. lateral slides, patient hoists, wheelchair transfers)
- Monitoring and maintaining stores and equipment inventories
- Assisting with administrative tasks including verbal communication and data entry
- Assist with quality improvement activities and service development initiatives under the guidance of supervising allied health professionals
- Engage with educational opportunities and on the job training, including opportunities to achieve competencies and advanced skills with increasing complexity.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

- Year 12 recent graduates must have completed Maths and one other Science subject to meet RMIT entry requirements to the Degree.

- Prior experience in a healthcare environment

Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy, plus any additional requirements through RMIT University.
- Enrolment in the RMIT Embedded Student Nuclear Medicine Industry Practice course – this will be confirmed between Canberra Health Services and RMIT once a successful candidate is identified for this role.
