Position overview

A Radiation Therapist is an experienced practitioner who provides expert clinical leadership and contributes significantly to service development, technology implementation, education, and quality improvement within the Radiation Oncology Department. The role requires a high level of knowledge and expertise in contemporary radiation therapy practice, with demonstrated and ongoing proficiency in clinical practice, and proficiency in at least one complete clinical area. A Radiation Therapist Grade 3.1 supports best practice standards, contributes to multidisciplinary collaboration, and plays an active role in mentoring and supporting less experienced staff while fostering innovation and continuous improvement in patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

  1. Maintain high-level clinical skills in an area of clinical specialty, making an active contribution to planning, development, and evaluation of clinical practice.
  2. Provide clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team by contributing specialist knowledge to complex patient care, workflow optimisation, and clinical decision-making.
  3. Contribute to the development, review, and implementation of departmental policies, protocols, and clinical guidelines to support safe, effective, and evidence-based radiation therapy practice.
  4. Exercise independent professional judgement in solving problems and managing clinical cases.
  5. Actively engage in clinical training, education, supervision and assessment of Radiation Therapists and students as required.
  6. Participate in relevant quality assurance / quality control programs, including research and development.
  7. Participate in ongoing professional education and personal performance review processes.
  8. Support the Radiation Therapist Unit Supervisor (Grade 4 Level 1) in the safe, effective, and efficient operation of a relevant designated unit / service.
  9. Participate in undertaking shift work, overtime work, and on-call duty outside normal work hours when required by the Radiation Oncology section.
  10. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • Demonstrated participation in multidisciplinary discussions, service planning, or meetings, with effective communication.
  • Involvement in audits, QA/QC programs, research activities, or service improvement initiatives, with evidence of contribution or implementation outcomes.
  • Documented contributions to procedure and updates, implementation projects, or practice changes adopted within the department.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, maintain workflow, and contribute to service continuity during routine operations or supervisor absences.

Qualifications

Specific qualifications and experience include, but is not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • A recognised tertiary qualification in Radiation Therapy.
  • Unconditional registration as a Radiation Therapy Practitioner with the AHPRA Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia.
  • ACT Radiation Council License to operate radiation emitting apparatus used for Radiation Therapy purposes.

Experience

Specific experience includes, but is not limited to, the following.

  • A minimum of 5 years postgraduate experience.

Desirable

  • Experience in change management and service improvement initiatives.

Prior to commencement

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:

  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
  • Comply with CHS credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals.

  3. Demonstrated participation in Quality Improvement activities including active participation in relevant research and/or development activities.
  4. Demonstrated ability to supervise, train and assess new graduates, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and other Health Professionals in Radiation Therapy practice.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays’ behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
