The Quality, Safety and Governance team provides leadership for corporate and quality and safety, assurance, and governance systems and processes, supporting all other clinical and operational areas within the Canberra Health Services Network to deliver exceptional health care. It includes Quality and Safety, National Standards and Accreditation, Internal Audit, Risk Management and Compliance, Medico Legal, Corporate Records, Strategic Communications, Clinical Incident Management, Policy and Strategy areas. The Clinical Incident Coordinator’s primary function is to coordinate clinical incident management processes across the Canberra Health Services Network. Under the limited supervision of the Director you will identify, analyse, investigate and report potential patient harm and patient safety concerns, incidents and indicators to support continuous improvement. The position will also provide education and promote and guide the application of incident management principles and processes to support continuous improvement for the provision of safe and high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Under the limited direction of the Director Incident Management, you will:

  1. Review concerns, incidents and notifications lodge through the clinical incident reporting system for classification, accuracy and completeness and distribution to relevant staff.
  2. Provide advice and support to Canberra Health Services staff on the use of the clinical incident reporting system.
  3. Deliver and evaluate clinical incident management education and training, review of tools/templates, and educational resources, including incident investigation methodology in a clinical environment.
  4. Undertake incident investigations in line with best practice and the Canberra Health Services Clinical Incident Management policy and procedure.
  5. Conduct quality assurance activities to monitor the quality of internal business processes and organisational improvement initiatives post implementation.
  6. Participate in quality improvement initiatives to improve patient safety, patient experience, and clinical effectiveness.
  7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

Health Professional 4

  • Relevant Health professional Tertiary qualifications and recent work experience in a related field in a health care setting.
  • Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or be eligible for membership of the appropriate professional organisation.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience working professionally in the healthcare setting across a number of fields.

Registered Nurse 3.1

  • Be registered or be eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Relevant post graduate qualifications in nursing.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience working professionally in the healthcare setting across a number of fields.

Desirable

Senior Officer Grade C

  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience working professionally in the healthcare setting across a number of fields.
  • Have led a quality improvement initiative in the past 12 months.
  • Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.

Registered Nurse 3.1

  • Relevant post graduate qualifications in health management or leadership.

Prior to commencement

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:

  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Comply with CHS credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals only.

CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

  1. Extensive clinical experience in health care with understanding of the broader health care environment (hospital, community, and mental health) and demonstrated contribution to patient safety and patient centred care.
  2. Demonstrated understanding of the incident management processes, investigations and the ability to analyse and use clinical data to identify potential issues, risks, and trends to drive quality and safety improvements in health care.
  3. Demonstrated high level communication skills including ability to prepare high quality written reports and high-level computer literacy.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment, to multi-task, prioritise workload and meet timelines in a bus environment.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays’ behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
