Following the opening of the new Emergency Department and Critical Services Building (Building 5) at Canberra Hospital, works will now start to modernise and improve the Yamba Drive entrance.

What is being delivered?

The area around the old Emergency Department and the Yamba Drive hospital entrance will be transformed into a more welcoming, modern and uplifting space.

The improvements will include:

  • new seating
  • a dedicated wheelchair collection point
  • new art and sculptures to enhance the space
  • a new bus stop to improve connections with public transport
  • new landscaping and green space
  • shade cover to protect from the elements and enhance comfort
  • an upgraded courtyard area for staff.

These improvements and building works will deliver a more inviting space for patients and visitors, integrating seamlessly with the new aesthetic of the growing hospital.

The upgrade also includes the relocation and modernisation of some of the site’s existing Anzac Day artefacts including flagpoles, plaques, boulders and the rosemary plants, which when complete, will take pride of place in the improved entrance area.

Works have started and will take about 12 months to complete.

In addition, the renewal of public amenities in the existing Building 2 foyer will continue to progress. These works include new flooring and seating areas, a new Veterans Lounge, new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Lounge, gift shop and café.

While these works are underway the Yamba Drive entrance will be closed, including roads and footpaths in this area. Redirections to the hospital’s Main Entrance on Hospital Road will be sign posted.

Patients, visitors and staff are encouraged use the Southern Multistorey Carpark to access the hospital’s new Main Reception and Emergency Department off Hospital Road.
