The Canberra Hospital Emergency Department is now located in the new Building 5 with its own dedicated entrance at street level.

Building 5, the new home to critical care services at Canberra Hospital is now open.

At 44,000sqm, the new nine-storey building is a major upgrade and expansion to the hospital. It has been designed to meet the growing health care needs of our community.

Services now located in Building 5, creating a better-connected and person-centred hospital:

  • the main entry and reception
  • the emergency department (ED)
  • operating theatres and day of surgery admission
  • the Sterilising Services Unit
  • the intensive care unit
  • cardiac catheterisation laboratories
  • several inpatient wards, including Acute Cardiac Care Unit, Acute Medical Unit, Emergency General Surgery and Trauma, Neurosurgery and Oral Maxillofacial and Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery
  • medical imaging
  • helideck.

Hospital main reception and entry

The Building 5 main entrance is located on the southern side of Hospital Road, off Bateson Road. It is the new main entry and reception to Canberra Hospital and is around 300 metres from the Southern Multistorey Car Park.

If you need to go to the ED

There is a separate entrance to the ED at street level on the southern side of Hospital Road, off Bateson Road. You can also drop off and pick up at the entrance.

The closest parking is the southern multi-storey car park on Bateson Road, less than 300m away.

The new ED features eight treatment zones, medical imaging and has a separate children’s emergency area with an outdoor play zone and sensory room.
