The $50 million expansion of Canberra Hospital’s dedicated facilities for women, newborn babies, children and young people is now complete.

As part of the expansion, facilities have been designed and purpose-built for the patients that use them and to meet the needs of our growing community for many years to come.

Amenities for patients and their families and carers have also been improved to make the hospital experience more comfortable and enhance care outcomes.

New and expanded services include:

  • Additional 15-bed Postnatal Ward – refreshed from the old antenatal ward to increase bed capacity over time to meet future service demand.
  • Expanded Special Care Nursery – four new cots bringing the total across the Nursery to 18, two parent rooming in rooms taking the total to four and upgraded parent amenities.
  • New integrated Adolescent Unit – with six dedicated mental health beds – a first for the ACT – six medical and surgical beds and two enhanced care beds.
  • New Adolescent Mental Health Day Program– accessed off Gilmore Crescent, this is a purpose-built space for a day program run by Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.
  • New 3-bed Early Pregnancy Service – a therapeutic, healing space for women and pregnant people with complications relating to early pregnancy.
  • New 15-bed Antenatal and Gynaecology Unit – located beside the Early Pregnancy Service Unit, this new ward allows strong integration between the two services.
  • New Gynaecology Day Unit – a dedicated procedure suite for adolescents and women who require gynaecological treatment.
  • 8-bed Maternity Assessment Unit – for women and pregnant people in the second half of their pregnancy or in the first two weeks after giving birth who need pregnancy-related assessment.
  • New clinical administration building – to support expanded services in Centenary Hospital.
  • Refurbished 12-bed Paediatric High-Care Ward – for children aged between seven days and 17 year who require high levels of care.

The facilities that have been expanded and upgraded will serve the Canberra community for many years to come.
