In a life threatening emergency dial Triple Zero (000)

We provide care to children with a cancer diagnosis under a shared-care arrangement with a tertiary paediatric oncology service such as Sydney Children’s Network.

About this service

We offer care for children with a cancer diagnosis who have a fever during a period of neutropenia, which is a common complication of cancer treatment.
Fever and suspected or confirmed neutropenia is a medical emergency and children will require urgent treatment.

We also provide support for children undergoing chemotherapy, such as central venous catheter care, blood and platelet transfusions and very limited Day Stay chemotherapy.

Follow up care is also available for children with common oncology diagnoses, such as those with acute leukaemia and some solid tumours.

Who we care for

We see children up to the age of 16 years, who are under a shared-care arrangement with a tertiary paediatric oncology unit, such as the Sydney Children’s Network.

How to access this service

Your child will be referred to the service by their primary oncology team.

What to expect

Your child’s oncology team will work with our general paediatric team to organise a Day Stay Unit review or outpatient appointment.

Once your child has been referred to our service, we’ll tell you who to call if your child is unwell or has a fever and needs to be seen while on chemotherapy.

Centenary Hospital for Women and Children is not a tertiary paediatric service and provides general paediatric care only. If a child with an oncology diagnosis is unwell, they may require transfer by the Newborn and Paediatric Emergency Transport Service to a tertiary paediatric hospital. Complex, multi-day and inpatient chemotherapy is not provided at Centenary Hospital for Women and Children.
