We care for and treat people who have issues with their upper and lower limb bones and joints.

About this service

Our elective Orthopaedic Surgery Clinic provides specialist review for a range of orthopaedic conditions affecting joints and bones of the upper and lower limbs. This means we work out the treatment that is best for you and your injury.

Depending on the nature of your condition, you may first be reviewed by the Orthopaedic Screening Clinic. The team may recommend you start physiotherapy first or may recommend you see us for specialist review and surgery.

We may refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in:

  • pelvic surgery
  • knee surgery
  • shoulder/elbow surgery
  • hip surgery
  • ankle/foot surgery
  • spine surgery
  • hand/wrist surgery.

Orthopaedic surgery is also offered through North Canberra Hospital surgical services.

Who we care for

We care for people aged 16 and older, who are referred by their General Practitioner, via our Emergency Department or another medical specialist.

Patients under the age of 16 requiring an elective orthopaedic review are treated in Sydney.

How to access this service

Your General Practitioner or other medical practitioner will refer you to this service.

What to expect

There is high demand for public surgical outpatient services.

We assess all referrals against clinical criteria which is available for referring medical officers. If your condition meets this criteria, you will be offered an appointment.

We encourage you to talk to your General Practitioner about the most appropriate care for your condition.

We aim to triage your referral within five days of receiving it.

We will send you a letter to confirm you are on the waiting list, and we will contact you when an appointment is available.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Medicare card
  • Any letters or correspondence from your GP
  • List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
  • Previous x-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports
